"The Ottawa Carleton Male Choir"
Although in existence for only a few years, The Ottawa Carleton Male Choir is gaining wide recognition and appreciation for its concerts in the Ottawa region and elsewhere.
In 1997, the Ottawa Exhibition needed people of different cultural background to entertain at their 'International Village'. Henk Huizenga, of Metcalfe, Ont., gathered a group of men together and they called themselves 'The Dutch Treat'. This group is still in existence and has become a regular singing attraction at the annual 'Dutch Day' in Merrickville, Ont. and at other events of the Dutch-Canadian community in Ottawa. From this group evolved a larger group of singers, namely, 'The Ottawa Carleton Male Choir'.

Comprising some 35 members from all walks of life, the Choir is under the direction of Archie Smith, who has directed bands and choral groups in the Salvation Army and elsewhere, both in Canada and the USA. He has performed many times as bass-baritone soloist. Mr. Smith directed The Osgoode Township Male Choir for 15 years, including two highly successful concert tours to The Netherlands.
The choir’s piano accompanist for a number of years was Oksana Iliasevitch, who studied piano in Ukraine. Presently, the choir pianist is Donna Cherry, of Russell, and the organist is Margaret van Dyk, of Ottawa, both of whom accompanied the choir in concerts in the Netherlands, in May 2002.
The Choir is interdenominational and likes to sing classical, sacred, spirituals and contemporary selections, in different languages.
In its short existence, the Choir has had the distinction of performing in 1998 and 2001 in concerts with the renowned Dutch organist Sander van Marion, in Ottawa, Brockville, Renfrew and Kingston.
Annual Christmas concerts were presented, respectively with the Salvation Army Ottawa Citadel Brass Ensemble, violinist Tara Hultquist, the Stairwell Carolers, organist Sharon Adams, soloist Garth Hampson and organist Jonathan Oldengarm. The December 2003 Christmas concert featured soprano Renée Stalenhoef and the choir's former pianist Oksana Iliasevitch. The choir had a very successful concert tour in southern Ontario, in 1999, performing in Guelph, Hamilton and Brampton. In February 2000, the choir had the pleasure of participating in Ottawa in an outstanding panflute and organ concert with Dutch musicians Noortje van Middelkoop and Harm Hoeve. A few months later, the Choir presented inspired performances with virtuoso organist Andre Knevel, of St. Catharines, at Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa and at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Brockville.
The Choir undertook an exciting two-week concert tour to The Netherlands in May 2002. Concerts took place with virtuoso organist Sander van Marion in The Hague/Scheveningen and with local choirs in Hilversum, Hooge Zwaluwe / Oosterhout, Borgharen / Maastricht, Dinxperlo, and Farmsum / Delfzijl.
On Wednesday, September 7, 2005 the Choir started a new choral season. New members are welcome!!! If you can sing, HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO JOIN US!!!
