1997 - 2007  TENTH ANNIVERSARY

THE OTTAWA CARLETON MALE CHOIR

In 1997, the Ottawa Exhibition needed people of different cultural background to entertain at their 'International Village'.

Henk Huizenga, of Metcalfe, Ont., gathered a group of men together and they called themselves 'The Dutch Treat'.  This group is still in existence and has become a regular singing attraction at the annual 'Dutch Day' in Merrickville, Ont. and at other events of the Dutch-Canadian community in Ottawa.

From this group evolved a larger group of some 50 singers, namely, 'The Ottawa Carleton Male Choir'.

The Ottawa Carleton Male Choir”

Founded in 1997,  ‘The Ottawa Carleton Male Choir’ has gained wide recognition and appreciation for its concerts in the Ottawa region and elsewhere.  The Choir comprises some 50 members from all walks of life and is under the direction of Archie Smith, who has directed bands and choral groups in the Salvation Army and elsewhere, both in Canada and the USA.

Annual Christmas concerts have featured the Stairwell Carolers, violinist Tara Hultquist, the Salvation Army Ottawa Citadel Brass Ensemble, organist Sharon Adams, the Rideau Lakes Brass Quintet, organist Jonathan Oldengarm, baritone soloist Garth Hampson,  soprano Renée Stalenhoef from Auburn, Ontario, the Manotick Brass Ensemble, organist James Calkin, Rohahes (Iain Phillips) on the harp and flute, and the Croatian Folklore Ensemble ‘Croatoan’.  Tonight, December 8, 2006 we welcome Guest musicians Alan Thomas, organist and choir director at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and the Parkdale United Church Orchestra.

Over the years, the Choir has performed in Brockville, Kingston, Renfrew, Williamsburg, Buckingham, Guelph, Hamilton, Manotick,  Peterborough, Whitby, Brampton, Mississauga and Wakefield. The Choir had the distinction of performing with such artists as virtuoso organist Andre Knevel from St. Catharines and the renowned organist Sander van Marion from Scheveningen, the Netherlands.

The Choir’s highlights in 2006 were the concerts in St. Thomas and Chatham, Ontario, together with the Crescendo Male Choir from St. Thomas.  The Choir undertook an excellent concert tour in the Netherlands, in May 2002,  and is now busy planning a two week concert

Tour to the Czech Republic and The Netherlands, in May 2007.

Organist Andre Knevel is featured as accompanist on the Choir’s first CD “A World of Music”, issued  in December 2001,  The CD presents  23 selections of a variety of musical genres including classical, sacred, spiritual and secular works, in various languages.  The popularity of the CD is proven in the sell-out of the first order and the need to re-order.

The Choir is excited to present its second recording, a Christmas CD titled: “O Sing for Joy!”, with accompaniment by pianist Oksana Iliasevitch.  This CD makes an excellent and inexpensive Christmas gift!

Through its concerts in past years, the Choir has contributed some  $15,000 to different charities - C.H.E.O., Perley & Rideau Veterans' Health Centre, Winchester Hospital, Bone Marrow Transplant Fund, Churches/Organ Building Funds, Operation Go Home, the Osgoode Township Care Centre, the Ottawa Rotary Home Foundation, the Gideons and the Cancer Society.  The net proceeds of tonight’s concert are for the Aphasia Centre of Ottawa.

The Choir’s rehearsals are Wednesday evenings from 7:30 till 9:30 PM, at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, 1475 Merivale Road, Ottawa.  New members are welcome!  If you can sing, come and  join us!!!

Businesses are invited to support the choir through advertising in future concert programs.  For information on concerts or bookings, contact: Cor Hogeveen, Concert Convener, Tel. 613-224-1597; Fax 613- 224-4745;  E-Mail: corh@ncf.ca.  Enjoy the Choir’s Website at:
